Gothic Disney: “The Mad Doctor”, Rob Zombie and a Man Named Hand

Image via DTierney30 on Disney Wikia.

Released in 1933, The Mad Doctor is literally a nightmare of a ‘toon! A full synopsis of the story can be found on The Disney Wikia, but the most interesting aspect to me is depicted in the image above where the mad scientist Dr. XXX can be seen ready to fuse a chicken and Pluto! This reminds me of Otis’ “Fish Boy” from House of 1000 Corpses (warning – very graphic and disturbing video), which is no surprise because Rob Zombie is a Disney fan…just listen to the opening stanzas of Superbeast….it’s the Space Mountain launch music!

Check out the full cartoon and more after the cut…..

No doubt, everyone knows the good Doc is the featured viliain in Epic Mickey and Epic Mickey: The Power Of Two, but the cartoon itself appears as a level in the game Mickey Mania and the good Doc appears in The Roger Rabbit short Tummy Troubles

This scary little cartoon, banned in Great Britain for fear of frightening children, was directed by David Hand who later went on to become the supervising director for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi and Victory Through Air Power. He then went on to become Disney’s first Studio Production Supervisor (working directly beneath Walt) for films like Pinocchio, Dumbo and Fantasia.
